Mr.Cluff’s Excursion to China
MARCH 12th - 22nd. 2010.

Please join our Abbey Group on its March Break 2010 Adventure in China.

This March Break is my 21st trip [see itinerary below] and, for the first time, we are venturing to The People’s Republic of China. A trip of this sort is attractive for many good reasons. The climate is always agreeable during March [68-75 F]. World-famous Museums and Historic Sites are not crowded. The best guides are available. Off-season rates help keep the cost of the trip down. Even though costs have skyrocketed due to fuel prices, a weaker Canadian dollar, and added security, our trip to China represents excellent value for the money. This is a timely opportunity to develop an understanding of a country that has been a major influence on the History, Literature, Art, Drama, Sports, Mathematics, and Language courses we study at school, and is presently making an enormous impact on the politics and economy of our world.
With Explorica Worldwide Educational Travel [Ontario Travel Act Registration # 50012536]and additional supervisory assistance from Mrs. Cluff , Mr. Cigna, and Abbey parents, I am proposing a travel adventure that I know will be safe, educational, and fun for all.

Mr.Cluff’s Excursion to Egypt
MARCH 13th - 22nd. 2009.

This March Break 2009 Trip is the 20th year I have taken Abbey students away [see itinerary below] and March Break travel has never been more interesting. This year’s Egypt programme was designed at The Abbey for our March Break trip in 1992 and was one of the best trips we’ve ever done. Since our last visit, many major Egyptian discoveries have been unearthed; particularly in Luxor’s Valley of The Kings. Our trip covers an incredible amount of ground. We’ll fly on large and small commercial airplanes, journey down the Nile aboard a luxury hotel cruise boat, sail on Egyptian feluccas, and travel ancient highways on comfortable coaches and perhaps even “not-so-comfortable” camels. Rising fuel costs and airport taxes have driven the price of air-travel higher and higher, but this year’s trip still reflects exceptional value. Our group will find this excursion fun, informative, and well-paced; with sufficient “free time” opportunities to relax and enjoy our very exotic surroundings.

Mr.Cluff’s Excursion to Paris and London
MARCH 6 – 17th. 2008.

This March Break 2008 Trip is the 19th year I have taken Abbey students away [see itinerary below] and it is guaranteed to be full of experiences that will last a lifetime. The core of this popular programme was designed for a March Break trip in 1996 and repeated it in 2002. Our group found the itinerary fun, informative, and not overly-tiring. This year’s inclusion of AMIENS and NORMANDY should be of particular interest to Grade 12 English students who will be studying Jane Urquhart’s award-winning novel, The Stone Carvers, which deals with the building of the Canadian WW I Memorial at Vimy Ridge . Please look at our itinerary to see the incredible combination of history, sight-seeing, and free-time for discovery that this excursion has in store.

All air and land arrangements are being made by Upper Canada Study Holiday. This company specializes in student excursions and has provided exceptional service to the Loretto Abbey community for more than 30 years. They are registered and fully insured under the Ontario Travel Act.

This trip will span the March Break (Thursday, March 6-Monday March 17, 2008). This is an official school trip, supervised by Mr. and Mrs. Cluff and at least one other teacher, and is being undertaken with permission from the administration of Loretto Abbey and the Director of the Toronto District Catholic School Board. As in past years, Upper Canada Study Holiday and Mr. Cluff are committed to the educational value of this programme and to returning travelers safe, sound, and satisfied.

Abbey Students Follow Mozart’s Footsteps

During the March Break (2007), 29 students of the Loretto Abbey Music Department, 3 chaperones and their teacher followed Mozart’s footsteps in Europe. The tour began in London where the young Mozart wrote his first choral music using English text. The group then travelled to Prague, Czech Republic, where Mozart premiered several works and was adored. The tour continued to Mozart's birthplace in Salzburg, Austria, and finally to Vienna where he was married and, of course, died at the age of 35. Highlights of the trip included Sunday Mass at St. Gilgen's only church in the mountains just outside Salzburg (this is where Mozart's mother was baptized and attended mass). They also toured of the world renowned Bosendorfer piano factory just outside Vienna and the majestic Schoenbrunn Palace where the young Amadeus and his sister first performed for royalty. With a bit of luck, the music students of Loretto Abbey will be visiting Spain next year for another musical tour.

Loretto Abbey Students Build Residence for Maternity Centre in Nigeria

Students at Loretto Abbey raised over $20,000 last year to build a doctors’ residence for the Nsirimo Health Maternity Centre in Umuahia, Nigeria. All monies were raised by students, from students. Throughout the year, various student-lead groups at the school promoted efforts such as an International picnic, a fashion show, and a “Stop, Rock and Roll” concert, among many other initiatives. A cheque was officially handed over to representatives from Canadians for Love of Humanity (CLOH) on Wednesday, September 20th. Dr. Michael Nwabuogu, who spent five weeks in the area this year to oversee the completion of the work presented a plaque to the students. The Honourable Chief Stephen Akwarandu, Ward Representative of the five area villages and visiting Toronto from Umuahia, was also in attendance to thank the students for their efforts.

The residence consists of a 14-room, semi-detached house for a medical doctor and a registered nurse/midwife. Funds have also contributed towards a retro-fit for the Centre. Inspired by the United Nations’ Millennium Goals, the students continue to receive guidance from the advice of Sr. Carmen Distin, International Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) Provincial Leader and Sr. Doryne Kirby, IBVM. Sr. Doryne represents the IBVM in the Non-Governmental Organization (NG0) at the U.N. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are solemn pledges made by all countries in the world and embrace a collective responsibility to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality and equity at the global level.
