HISTORY AND TRADITION OF LORETTO ABBEY

"Women should and can provide something more than
ordinary in the face of common need" -Mary Ward, Founder, IBVM
Loretto Abbey is a non-semestered school for girls,
founded by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) in 1847. Steeped
in tradition, Loretto
Abbey Toronto (LAT) was founded in 1928 and has a proud history of providing
challenging academics and a broad range of co-curricular activities. Our goal
is to prepare our students to aspire to leadership roles, in the footsteps
of Mary Ward, as Christian women in a changing society. Our philosophy is
to encourage
personal development and academic excellence to enable students to work with
others to bring the gospel to life. Our goal is to help individual learners
to achieve their full potential spirituality, intellectually and emotionally,
all understood in the context of a faith community of women who seek truth
and act for justice.
In addition to the traditional compulsory and elective courses, we offer Co-operative
Education, Extended French, Advanced Placement Programmes and
Special Education (Resources and Gifted). Our co-curricular programme builds
on the long standing history of school spirit and participation. Our students
are encouraged to become involved by joining one of many clubs and athletic
teams. Students who attend Loretto Abbey wear the double blue proudly, cheerfully
supporting the Abbey Gators.
