The United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals are solemn pledges made by all countries in the world which embrace a collective responsibility to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality and equity at the global level. Inspired by the Millennium Development Goals, the students continue to receive guidance from the advice of Sr. Carmen Distin, International Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) Provincial Leader and Sr. Doryne Kirby, IBVM. Sr. Doryne represents the IBVM in the Non-Governmental Organization (NG0) at the U.N.
Each year since 2005, the Loretto Abbey administration, in consultation with the Loretto sisters, have chosen one charity which embodies the Millennium Development Goals of the Loretto community as the recipient of their major fundraiser.
2008-2009 School Fundraising Project :
During the School Fundraising Project for 2008-2009, we are raising money on
behalf of the Loretto Sisters for Becoming Neighbours, which is an organization
that assists refugees and immigrant families in becoming established in the
community. Our hope is to raise money for them to put towards the purchase
of a van to pick up donations they receive from the community.
2007-2008 School Fundraising Project :
The focus of the School Fundraising Project for 2007-2008 was SalvAide’s
Cashew Project in El Salvador. We raised environmental awareness and funds
to support a sustainable agricultural project which was a cashew plantation.
This project created jobs for the local community to plant the trees as well
as an income for those who harvested the crop. Our goal for this year was to
raise $20,000. We are happy to report that once again our whole school community
embraced this project and the final amount raised was $ (how much?)
2006-2007 School Fundraising Project :
Our focus for the 2006-2007 School Fundraising Project was St. Vincent’s
Primary School, a Loreto school in Tharkarpukur, India. When we contacted the
school, we asked what they could do with $10,000 and they indicated that they
would like a more permanent playground for their students as they lose their
current one to monsoons each year. We set a goal of $20,000 and we are happy
to report that we actually exceeded it. We sent them a cheque for $25,000 thanks
to the efforts of our whole community.
2005-2006 School Fundraising Project :
Students at Loretto Abbey raised over $20,000 during the 2005-2006 school year
to build a doctors’ residence for the Nsirimo Health Maternity Centre
in Umuahia, Nigeria. The residence consists of a 14-room, semi-detached house
for a medical doctor and a registered nurse/midwife. Funds were also contributed
towards a retro-fit for the Nsirimo Health Maternity Centre.
All monies were raised by students, from students. Throughout the year, various
student-led groups at the school promoted efforts such as an International
Picnic, a fashion show, and a “Stop, Rock and Roll” concert, among
many other initiatives. A cheque was officially handed over to representatives
from Canadians for Love of Humanity (CLOH) on Wednesday, September 20th, 2006.
Dr. Michael Nwabuogu, who spent five weeks in the area this year to oversee
the completion of the work, presented a plaque to the students. The Honourable
Chief Stephen Akwarandu, Ward Representative of the five area villages who
was also visiting Toronto from Umuahia, was also in attendance to thank the
students for their efforts.
